ABOUT THE BACKGROUND PHOTO: In Arizona, the Pony Express is still an officially sanctioned way to send mail through the US Postal Service.  Early every year, nearly two dozen riders in cowboy attire are sworn in as honorary mail carriers and relay mailbags along the 200 mile route from Holbrook to Scottsdale. The Hashknife brand that appears on the Expess’ postmark  below was adopted by the Aztec Land and Cattle Co. in Holbrook in the 1860s.
